I was overwhelmed at all of my couch choices, but in the end I bought a charcoal gray linen sectional and I’ve been thankful almost every day since. Here’s why:
1//Gray is flexible.
When it comes to home design, I change my mind (a lot). And we have moved a lot as well. Our gray couch looked great in our 1780s historic colonial, our stint in a contemporary apartment and in our current midcentury modern-style home. I had a few pieces of furniture that looked great in the colonial and really silly in our MCM home. I ended up giving them away, determined to buy more flexible furniture in the future--but my gray sectional has been the first piece of furniture unpacked at every place.
2// Gray is flattering.
Every color palate goes great with gray. Are you a fan of soothing pastels? They really pop out against gray. Have you been aiming for a fresh farmhouse vibe? Gray goes seamlessly with warm whites and aquas. Are you still searching for your own personal style? Gray will go with it. Whenever you figure it out. No rush.
3//Gray is functional.
That is, gray covers a multitude of sins—especially in this handsome charcoal linen. We have a 4 year old, a 2 year old and a very excitable 4 month old boxer puppy. We have had our beautiful gray linen sectional from Joss and Main for a year and a half and it still looks fabulous. Black couches can show a lot of fuzz—but charcoal linen hides everything until you can get around to vacuuming it. The darker color hides even those “accidental” magic marker spots that your artistic child may create.
Oh, speaking of spots on the couch....since this couch is fabric and not leather, I used time-tested Scotch Guard on our couch to protect the fabric from the inevitable liquid spills—it was super easy to do (I did it when the girls were asleep, and it only took ten minutes!). Scotch Guard is something I found out about too late in life! It helps liquids to stay on the surface of fabric for a minute or so, just enough time to sprint to your paper towel roll. Keep that gray couch looking fresh!
Our couch (pictured above) came from Joss and Main--and it is one of those pieces that just makes me SO happy to have. It has served our family so well already. If a big sectional doesn't fit your space, here's a round up of some smaller but still stylish sofas in gray. Click the photo for more information or to purchase.
