Science should be about experiences, not sitting quietly at a desk.
Our approach to science works for us—my children are still young and the process will change as they do. I use a science textbook to “keep me on track”, but I consider each chapter a chance to explore whatever part piques their interest. And we totally skip ahead sometimes. I love digging in thematically, and we often read extra books that go along with whatever we are learning about.
This year I am building our science exploration around BJU Press- we are SO excited for this 2nd grade science textbook. The table of contents was awesome, and includes: What scientists do, How plants grow, What fossils show us, How the body works, and more. All the fun stuff!
We LOVE the TOOB toys! We use them to reinforce whatever we are learning—-usually we pair the figurines with kinetic sand, water or play doh. My hands-down favorite is the Human Organs TOOB.

Science for older children/ teaching multiple children in different grades
These can be used for multiple grades at the same time (two birds—one stone, yes!). There are varying accompanying notebooks to choose from based on your child’s grade level.
K-6 Botany Textbook
Introduce your young naturalists to plants---their structure, propagation, classification, and more---with this engaging yearlong classical science curriculum. Influenced by Charlotte Mason and the living books philosophy.
Zoology 1 K-6: Using the Charlotte Mason approach, 14 lessons include notebook activities, special projects, and hands-on experiments to teach kids about birds, bugs, bees, beetles, butterflies, and more.
Zoology 2: K-6 this detailed book contains chapters on aquatic animals, whales, seals, fish, sharks, reptiles, Cephalopods and many other creatures you didn't even know existed!
Zoology 3 K-6: Zoology 3 will give students a tour through their own backyards, bring them on a safari and introduce them to the varied inhabitants of jungles, deserts, forests, farms and other ecosystems. Discover how people are different from apes, how to tell poisonous and non-poisonous snakes apart, how to get away from a bear and more!
Chemistry + Physics: Grades 1-6. Study how the universe functions through this exploration of matter and energy; lessons cover atoms and molecules, pH levels, types of mixtures, mechanics, laws of motion, dynamics of motion, energy, waves, light, machines, magnets, and more
Science for the oldest crowd? I highly recommend the Exploring Creation science series—these are college-prep lab science courses for junior and senior high that do not require someone to teach the courses.
Grade 7-General Science: explores the scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, geology, archaeology, biology, anatomy and more, providing a wide range of exposure to various scientific vocabulary and concepts.
Grade 8- Physical Science: From the composition of air to icebergs to astrophysics, Students will receive thorough lessons in each element of the physical world
Grade 9- Biology: covers the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics, dissection, and ecosystems from a Christian perspective.
Grade 10: Advanced Biology/ The Human Body or Chemistry :covers measurement & units, atoms & molecules, atomic structure, molecular structure, polyatomic ions and molecular geometry, stoichiometry, acid-base chemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, and more.
Grade 11: Exploring Creation with Physics: a college-prep physics curriculum will give students a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general physics
